Imagine entering a scene straight out of a sci-fi adventure: seemingly weightless rocks float above the substrate, green plants cling to their rough surfaces—and in the midst of it all, bright orange guppies silently circle like birds between floating islands. Our 60-liter Nano Cube, "The Floating Stones," brings this surreal image to life.

It all began with a discovery of porous, volcanic pumice. Its extraordinary lightness inspired us to create a layout in which the stones seemingly ignore any physical boundaries. Open spaces between the rocks create an airy architecture, while compact epiphytes lend structure and life to the ensemble. A sight that inevitably makes visitors ask: "Do the stones float away afterward?"

Rocks Will Fly

The perspective image reveals an almost weightless network of pumice stones. Light penetrates the cavities, making every corner appear bright and open. Dark green Anubias and shimmering red Bucephalandras sit on the rocks; the first fine roots are already hanging down below, like threads that only loosely bind the stones to the underwater world.

Plan for planting

A deliberately reduced but varied selection:
On all stones
3 × Anubias barteri var. nana 'Bonsai'
6 × Anubias barteri var. nana 'Pangolino'

4 × Anubias barteri var. nana
Different leaf sizes of the same species create a seamless transition and enhance the “overgrown” look.

splash of color
5 × Bucephalandra sp. 'Mini Red'
Red leaf veins as a fantastic contrast to the dark green

Gap filler
4 × Aegagropila linnaei(moss balls, divided)
Close gaps between the stones and emphasize the spherical shape in the floating spaces.

Over time, the Anubias roots grow downwards and form hanging “lianas” that give the floating islands even more depth.

Guppies as an accent

A school of orange guppies glides between the rocks—sometimes in the foreground, sometimes hidden behind an Anubias. Their vibrant coloration adds bright accents and adds a new level of dynamism to the scene, as if birds were soaring through rocks.

How To Care

Water change

  • Week 1 – 3: replace ≈ 50% every 7 days.
  • From week 4: ≈ 25% per week is sufficient.

fertilization

  • From day 7, dose our All-in-One Elixir weekly – initially only ¼ of our dosage recommendation
  • Increase slowly if necessary.

CO₂ & Filtration
A moderate CO₂ supply, such as our Carbo Bio Style 120, keeps the Anubias compact and enhances the Bucephalandra colors. Make sure the filter outlet doesn't flow directly against the lightweight pumice stones—this will keep the "floating" stable.

You can find all the basics for running in, water values and stone preparation in ourBeginner's Guide(Link follows.) This will keep your floating landscape clear and algae-free for the long term.
