Utricularia graminifolia

Utricularia graminifolia

The lesser bladderwort

An absolute highlight in any aquascape is Utricularia graminifolia, the lesser bladderwort, a “carnivorous” foreground plant. The genus “Utricularia” belongs to the bladderwort family, whereby “graminifolia” means “with grass-like leaves”. In nature, bladderworts are specialists under water and have adapted to the underwater environment by developing special features: They form bladder traps on their leaves which possess a flap with lever hairs. Any object coming into contact with the lev er hairs triggers an instantaneous inward movement of the flap. The suction effect catapults microscopic organisms into the bladder, which are subsequently digested and used as an additional source or organic nitrogen.
